Things I'd like to tattoo... but my folks won't let me.

Here's a tattoo design I was playing with a while back. The sad thing is... being black in the south, I may never get a chance to tattoo it. There are many reasons, to many to discuss in this one post but to make a long story short, open-mindedness can be very scarce amongst my fellow black southerners.

If it isn't a name, a cross, praying hands, or something already on someone famous, it will get little to no consideration. I've even tried offering some different stuff for free but it never goes down because they back out to get something "safe". I understand that. Its your body and there is a natural comfort in what you already know but this doesn't promote growth for the client and definitely not for the artist.

"Why not tattoo white folks, Asians, or Latinos? They always seem to get wild shit." I'd be glad to, but alas, this is Georgia and subliminal segregation is alive and well. Clients of races other than my own usually stick with their own or just default to a white artist. Anyone who says otherwise is in denial. Can't do anything about that. Welcome to the dirty dirty :)

So lately I've been feeling kinda stagnant. If there is anyone in Georgia (or willing to travel here) looking to get something out of the ordinary, please hit me up. I'M DYING DOWN HERE!!!

The Pharaoh's Return (1st session)

Alchemy sketch of the lady in stone...

Just playing around in a free open source drawing application called Alchemy. Its nothing like Photoshop or any other painting program for that matter. Its focus is on starting the creative process, and not to actually see it through to finish. Peep the gallery to see what I'm talking about.

Here is a sketch I did entirely within alchemy and the reference pic I used.

Nakia's floral accents

Nakia fell through to finish up her back/side piece/cover up. It took 3 sessions. One more than usual but considering the spot I can't blame her. That first one was a doozie.

Heres one of the original ideas.

1st session: Here you can see the original butterfly.

2nd Session: Thicken out lines and do a little shading. Normally I wouldn't go so dark on the butterflies but to keep up continuity I kinda had to. The one being covered up was already so dark I really didn't have much of a choice. I'm still pleased with how it came out though.

3rd session: Total rethink of background. Then the finale! Since its still fresh the clouds are a lot more pronounced but after the healing process they'll be much lighter than the accents. I'm really really happy with the results and more importantly so was she. I'll post pics of it all healed up asap.

The Zaybo piece...

My boy Chris stopped by to get started on a memorial piece for his cousin Zaybo. To honer him he decided to get the same tattoo (a Jesus profile) on the same shoulder. One problem, the only photo of the tattoo was a blurry cam pic from a side angle.

So in the spirit of making do with what ya got, I took these steps...

1. I blew up the picture and traced it in photo shop.

2. Played with the outline a bit.

3. Here are the results from the first session. I got permission to do my thing in stead of following it line for line. I'm very happy about that. Its no fun tracing.

4. Then I just brainstorm till the next session.

I find myself constantly revamping old sketches and finished (or so I thought) pieces. Its pretty therapeutic during a dry spell plus I can gauge how good an old idea was. If its still as dope as it was when I originally made it then its probably worth the upgrade.

On this one I have some issues with the body and the hair. The face could use some work as well...

This one needs a background. I have a few ideas that should really take it elsewhere.

Sneak peek at Tenecia's 2nd session

During this session I started on the shading. I only got around to doing four of the outer skulls but even that little bit made a hell of a difference. I also started reinforcing the specks of light in the eye sockets. That gave it a nice creepy feel. Stay tuned for more...
